The Roman Conquest began in 55 B.C. with Julius Caesar. He noticed great agriculture and a land rich with timber and other great goods. The people inhabiting Britain were also very skilled in the art of pottery and smelting. Unsure if Britain was worth having a constant pressure of Roman troops, Caesar did not venture into Britain anymore. No other emperors thought Britain was worth their time and money until Emperor Claudius came around in 43 A.D. The Romans were known for many things, one being the size if their empire. They seemed to take control of any land that fascinated them in the slightest. In no time Claudius ordered an invasion into Britain. He would not lead this invasion but follow it. His commander of this invasion would be Aulus Plautius. The Romans fought hard and in many legions. These legions would each conquer different parts of Southern Britain. Once King Caratacus was defeated by the 20th legion, eleven British Kings surrendered. The Romans would continue to conquer Britain and by 47 A.D. half of the country was conquered. From then on Britain became a Roman province and Roman rules would be into effect. Although there would still be battles with Northern Britons such as Boudica, Britain belonged to Rome.
The Romans changed Britain forever. They changed nearly everything about their culture. Agriculture was changed to be like the Romans. They began to have the same way of law. They even began to share the same religious beliefs such as sharing the same gods and other things. Many buildings and statues were built in honor of the Romans. One wall was even built to keep out Northern Britons who went against the Romans. This wall was called Hadrian's Wall. This was built under the order of Emperor Hadrian. Hadrian ruled from 117-138 A.D. This wall kept barbarians and Picts out and left Roman Britain at peace. The construction of this wall began in 122 A.D. House steads, or farm houses were added to the wall once it was completed. In total, 16 house steads were added to the wall.
For my product, I did a parody on the Space Oddity lyrics. The lyrics represent the conversation from a Roman soldier to Emperor Hadrian when the Picts attack the wall. However Hadrian's wall is on the moon/ I also digitally drew an image of this. (The wall would have been a useless waste of materials. Or the Romans would have needed to invest a lot of stone and other materials to make the all big enough to keep the crazy jumping Picts out.)

The song is amazing... like I want this.
ReplyDeleteAdding the song is super creative, and the song itself is great :)
ReplyDeleteThe hyperlinks helped enhance my understanding of all the terms and ideas. Your idea for the product was great, well executed, and funny. I learned more than our books in class supplied.
ReplyDeleteI like the inclusion of Hadrian's wall to go along with the rest of your information (which was informative and accurate). You gave an in depth description of it, but I would have liked to read about its effectiveness, and about the other wall(s?) in the north.
ReplyDeleteThis seems to be a popular topic, but I still learned from your post. I really think you made yourself stand out by taking a different approach and writing a song, which I think is amazing.
